How do you know it is time to check your muffler packing? Just like the internal parts in your motor, if you have put 20-plus hours on your bike, or if you think that water may have entered the muffler due to riding in rain or mud, it is time to check the packing. If you prefer, some of the aftermarket exhaust companies and local shops offer rebuild services. Most stock and aftermarket mufflers are designed to replace the packing material relatively easy and we will show you the common steps here. Allowing water to get inside the muffler can accelerate the degradation process so it is recommended that you use a plug in the endcap when washing your bike. Contrary to belief, a properly prepped (i.e., quieter) muffler usually means more power than a loud muffler.įor both off-road and street motorcycles, the fiberglass packing materials in your muffler break down over time due to the extreme heat inside the muffler. ![]() In fact, it can add as much as two horsepower. Second, and contrary to common belief, a properly packed muffler increases the power of your bike. First, reducing the sound output of your bike lessens the chances of other people, especially non-motorcycle riders, complaining about you riding. There are two good reasons to repack your muffler. (pardon my newbieness) if I:ġ) put on after market pipes I also need to install a fuel commander and get a dyno-tune?Ģ) drill-out some 1/2" holes in the backplates I need to also.? (Obviously this decreased back-pressure, which if I understand correctly reduces mileage (and increases power?!?) but does it require a fuel commander, dyno-tune, or does it simply result in a slightly lean or rich running condition?)ģ) do the Honest Abe (rebar-punch-through-the-baffles?) I need to also.? FC? D-T? etc.Cycle News Staff | Motorcycle How-To: Muffler Repacking Now this is slightly off-topic, but it is related. I'd like a *little* more volume from my 2007 C50 so I'm hesitant to buy new pipes or try a stock-modded pipe trick without knowing exactly what I'll be getting into. :lol:Īnyone heard a stock next to an Honest Abe next to a 1/2" multi-drilled-out set of backplates? I'd love to know how they each compare to each other, both when idling as well as when pouring on the coals. I agree with the AMA, we need to be pro-active to set dB levels FEDERALLY so states and towns don't pull their own BS laws to raise money for their piss-ant towns!!! A tourist town in PA (NewHope) has cops with sound meters pulling bikes over and handing them $300 TICKETS! So. Spare the political BS, town after town are enacting SOund level laws and handing out tickets, left and right. Loud Pipes just annoy non-riders giving us all grief. but a car turning in front of you ain't hearing your pipes!!! but if I ride behind one of them, then NO DOUBT, their loud. I usually group lead and have no idea how loud there pipes are. ![]() cuz' there only loud if your behind them. and I (nor they-we had this discussion) buy the 'LOUD PIPES SAVES LIVES'. (May actually try to pickup unmodded stock pipes to put back on) Funny thing, just about everyone I ride with has a Harley with LOUD pipes. I agree, I did the Honest Abe pipe mod and yes it sounds great, but something to be said for a totally quiet bike.
